All new up to 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 64GB of unified memory, ProRes acceleration on the most powerful Macbook M1 Pro and M1 Max

Apple has announced the all-new M1 Pro and M1 Max, the next innovative chips for the Mac. According to Apple, the CPU in M1 Pro and M1 Max delivers up to 70 percent faster CPU performance than M1, so tasks like compiling projects in Xcode are faster than ever. With a much faster GPU in M1 Pro, which is up to 2x faster than M1 and M1 Max is 4x faster than M1, it really allows users to fly through the most demanding graphical workloads.

MacRumors reports the new feature is exclusive to the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, even though it’s possible to configure a 14-inch MacBook Pro with that chip as well. It also apparently won’t work with the M1 Pro or original M1 models, so you’re looking at laptops with a starting price of $3,099 and up.

To boost the M1 Pro and M1 Max over the original M1, Apple has put tons of work into memory bandwidth as well as increased core counts. Whereas M1 has an 8-core CPU and up to a 7-core GPU, the M1 Pro goes up to 10 CPU cores and up to 16 GPU cores (though the base 14-inch MacBook Pro has slightly watered-down versions of both). The M1 Max has 10 CPU cores and either 24 or 32 GPU cores depending on the configuration you get.
